Artist Feature #16: Alex Heilbron

Alex Heilbron is an artist living and working in Vancouver. She graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute with a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting in 2009. Though primarily a painter, she also works in other mediums. Her bright, playful work is influenced by Modernist painters, cartoons and trash heaps. Since graduating she has exhibited her artwork nationally and internationally, including shows in Germany, France, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In 2011 Alex completed a Post-Baccalaureate program at the Pont Aven School of Contemporary Art in France and opened up the 824 Hawks Avenue Rowhouse Gallery with photographer Kurtis Wilson in Vancouver. She was recently included in the first annual Strathcona Artist Survey and self-published a catalogue of drawings called Drawings for Paintings.

Artist Feature #15: D-L Alvarez

To look at his credentials, which span from visual art and film work across to writing, curating and the like, you might be inclined to describe Darrell-Lynn Alvarez as a man with his fingers in many pies. Yet to conceive of Alvarez's work in this way is perhaps to overlook its very quintessence, which the artist himself describes as a overriding concern with historic narrative, whatever medium it may be taking at the time. Certainly his visual works give us a myriad of narrative clues to attempt to piece together, their vascillations between photo-realism and deconstruction of that realism gesturing towards fixed moments in time and the whirlwind of sociological dynamics surrounding them, and everything he touches acquiring a subtle and open-ended otherworldliness.

Dara's illustration style is uniquely playful and direct. Whether looking at his floating creatures or at his more complex perspective drawings, there's always an intrinsic excitement to be felt, that pulsates with unconditional life force and urges us to dive into his world.

Chloe's arcane and transfixing drawing style has the power to melt away the boundaries standing between life and death. Feeble limbs woven from vividly pulsating lines, bony and fleshy in turn, express both control and frenzy.

Through the interaction of his recurring, archetypal characters, Daehyun Kim's dreamlike illustrations touch the very core of the duality inherent in human relationships. His minimal monochrome style has the ability to summon moving metaphors from the deep beyond.

Also known as 'moonassi', Daehyun lives and works in Seoul and Vienna.

Shoboshobo is a Japanese onomatopoeic word meaning drizzly or dreary, and the moniker of Paris-based Mehdi Hercberg, a man with many arty-crafty strings in his bow.

Hercberg's artwork is raw and playful, instantly engaging, viral and uncompromising and utterly addictive. He is also a clothes designer, musician, art teacher and more.

Stuttgart-based Jonas Beuchert is a broad spectrum graphic designer and artist whose projects are as ambitious as fresh and spontaneous.

Digital dementia, social paradoxes and time/space obsessions are but a few of the themes he deals with. Jonas is the co-founder of Edition Taube.
